How Fire Protection Equipment Saves Lives

How Fire Protection Equipment Saves Lives

Having the right fire protection equipment in your Calgary home or business is absolutely crucial for ensuring the health and safety of your family or of your employees. Smoke detectors, fire alarms, wet sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers regularly save lives. At Metro Fire Protection Ltd. we provide fire protection systems and equipment in Calgary for all of your home or business requirements. Make sure that, if your property needs it, you have the following equipment in place.

Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms

There is no way to overemphasize the importance of having properly installed and working smoke detectors. A home should have a smoke detector on every floor, and preferably in every bedroom as well. You should be replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors at least once a year, and installing new smoke detectors at least every 10 years.

On top of smoke detectors, commercial properties should also be fitted with a proper fire alarm system complete with manual pull stations and heat detectors. Sirens and strobe lighting help alert all employees and customers to the need to either evacuate the building or listen carefully for instructions.

Wet Sprinkler Systems

Fire protection is about more than just notifying all inhabitants to a smoke or fire hazard; it’s also about mitigating that hazard. Wet sprinkler systems are a crucial part of any Calgary fire protection system. Connecting an automatic sprinkler system to a home or business’ fire alarm system can help to significantly slow the spread of fire and smoke.

While commercial buildings are required to have a working sprinkler system in place, Calgary homes are not. Be proactive and consider installing a sprinkler system in your home. According to the City of Calgary, residential sprinkler systems can reduce house fire deaths by 82%.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are one piece of fire protection equipment in Calgary that should be in every single home and business, as they can be used to put out or contain small fires before the fire department arrives. Always read the instructions before using a fire extinguisher and only consider using it if the fire is contained and not rapidly growing. Do not use a fire extinguisher if the room you are in has already filled up with smoke.

Expertly Installed Fire Protection Equipment in Calgary

Even though you should take all of the right steps to prevent a fire from igniting in your home or business in the first place, it’s vital to be prepared for the possibility of a fire as well. Wow, I had no idea that residential sprinkler systems were a thing, and reducing house fire deaths by 82% is a compelling statistic. I’m getting my old fire alarms replaced soon and I may look into getting a sprinkler system installed with the new ones. I have three kids, and their safety is very important to me, particularly as two of them are old enough that they could get into the matches on their own now.

That’s good to know that you need to read a fire extinguishes instructions before using it and only on fires that aren’t rapidly growing. My son was asking me what we needed to do if we ever had a fire in our house and I realized I don’t have a very sure plan other than running outside. I’ll have to see where I can buy some of this fire safety equipment and then teach my son how to use a fire extinguisher just in case.
